Making Your Own "One Makes the Difference" Kit
Make a "One Makes the Difference" To-Go Kit
We are relentlessly wasting the resources of the Earth upon which we rely. To help us change these habits, Circle of Life sells a kit (currently out-of-stock) for people to use instead of disposables that contains a mug, food container, bag, napkin, and utensils. Buying our kit is one option; with some creativity, you can create your own. Help conserve endangered resources by making a difference yourself:
Instead of using plastic or paper grocery bags every time you shop, bring your own reusable bag(s), preferably made of cloth so they will last awhile. Find one in your home lying around and make use of it. If you do end up with grocery bags from the store, you can still reuse them when you go shopping. They can also provide many other uses: plastic bags can operate as a liner for your trash bins; paper bags can be a reusable container for your recyclables, or you can get creative and use them as wrapping paper or cards. But ultimately, they're likely to end up in a landfill anyhow. This is why it is better to carry around reusable bags.
As an alternative to using paper cups wherever you go, search for a mug in your cabinet that you can bring along with you and use continually. If you don't have a suitable mug, check your local coffee shop or market.
As a substitute for using paper napkins, look around your house for a cloth napkin that you can carry with you, and refuse to use any paper napkins.
Do exactly the same with your eating utensils, plate, and bowl. Just bring them from home. Stainless steel is the best choice for containers and utensils. Nonetheless, anything is a far better choice than the styrofoam or plastic takeout containers that live in landfills for hundreds of years.
We recommend using stainless steel for your container and mug because plastics leech toxins into your food or beverages, especially when they get hot. We also recommend using organic cotton, hemp, or other sustainably-grown material for your cloth bag and napkin.
